Place Creative is working with Auckland Transport, Sport Waitakere, and Healthy Families to slow down traffic on Laura Street in Kelston. The neighbourhood street is heavily rat-run, and its residents don’t like to walk or play outside because of all the cars speeding through. Stakeholders came together with an innovative set of tools to hold a Play Street for the kids living on and around Laura Street, closing the street to non-resident traffic one Sunday afternoon, highlighting how fun it is to reclaim public space. The success of Play Streets leads into a Slow Streets programme for Laura Street, enabling the community to champion traffic-slowing measures.
